The gold price reacted strongly to the events of the last few days and rose significantly. The precious metal thus confirms its reputation as a crisis protection.

Should the crisis spread further and once again turn into a liquidity crisis, a large amount of precious metal could once again be thrown onto the market to protect liquidity. This would lead to a short-term price correction before gold and silver would start a new rally.

Our Zurich based affiliate, SINCONA Swiss International Coin Auction AG, the world renowned auction house for numismatics, is entrusted with the auction of what is probably the most complete collection of British gold coins in private hands. Far more than 2'000 coins and over 800 medals of the British Empire will be offered to the public in several auctions.

The first part of the SINCONA British Collection was sold at SINCONA Auction 72 in November 2021 for a total of around CHF 7 million. The second fireworks of British numismatics will follow in May 2022 in SINCONA Auction 75.

Gold coins of the 19th century in great demand

In the course of the last months the market shows a high demand of older gold coins, which circulated as means of payment from the beginning of the 19th century until about the middle of the 20th century. Particularly sought after are the mintages of the Latin Monetary Union (LMU), which included besides Switzerland (e.g. 20 Francs Helvetia and Goldvreneli), also France, Italy and Belgium, and later Greece, as well as other gold coins such as the British Sovereign or the 20 Mark of the German Empire.
