The First Modern Bullion Gold Coin

The Krugerrand (also called Krugerrand), minted by the South African Rand Refinery since 1967, is one of the most popular bullion coins made of gold. The obverse shows a portrait of Paul Kruger (President of the South African Republic from 1882 to 1902) and the inscription SUID-AFRIKA / SOUTH AFRICA. The reverse is decorated with a springbok antelope, the heraldic animal of South Africa, to the left and right of it the year of issue, above it KRUGERRAND, in the section FYNGOUD 1 OZ FINE GOLD. While the Krugerrand could theoretically be used as an official means of payment at a daily fixed exchange rate, the coin is practically exclusively considered an instrument of investment.

The fineness of the globally known and accepted gold coin is 916.7/1000 (22 carats), which corresponds to the British standard of gold alloy used for minting. The coin is minted in various finenesses. Typically since 1967 in the fine weight of 1 ounce, since 1980 also at 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/10 ounce and since 2017 also at 50 ounces, 5 ounces, 2 ounces (since 2018), 1/20 ounce and 1/50 ounce. By adding mainly copper, the hardness and thus the scratch resistance of the coin is increased and at the same time the gold coin shows a somewhat reddish-golden hue as a result.
