Important dates & details of the Sovereign Gold Coin (£1):
The American Eagle is one of the classic bullion coins and is particularly popular in the USA. In 1986 the United States reacted upon the embargo on import of the Krugerrand due to apartheid sanctions. As a result, the Gold American Eagle quickly became a widespread and popular bullion coin.
Like the Krugerrand, the American Eagle is made of 22-carat gold and, thanks to the addition of silver and copper, is harder than 24-carat gold coins such as the Canadian Maple Leaf.
The obverse features Lady Liberty with torch and olive branch and the year of minting, which, incidentally, was in Roman numerals from 1986 to 1991 and then in Arabic numerals. On the reverse is the American heraldic animal, the bald eagle.
