Important dates & details of the Goldvreneli 20 Swiss francs:
As a successor to the 20 Francs "Helvetia", the first "Goldvrenelis" were minted in 1897. The best-known and most popular Swiss gold coin was minted more than 58.6 million times and is still very popular today. In 1936, the Vreneli lost its function as a legal tender and became a commodity that is still collected and hoarded today.
The obverse of the coin shows the head of a young girl with curly hair and braids to the left in front of a mountain chain, while the reverse shows the face value "20 FR" divided by the Swiss cross in a shield in front of an oak branch above the year. The reverse shows the Swiss coat of arms in a cut-out shield on an oak branch. Above the centre of the shield are ribbon knots with two fluttering ends at the end of each branch, the year at the bottom and the mintmark "B" to the right. The post-war mints of 1935 also have an "L" to the left of the year. “Vreneli” is the Swiss diminutive for the female given name Verena.
These gold coins were means of payment at the face value of 20 CHF and were minted in millions from 1897 to 1949 in the weight standard of the Latin Mint Union (5.806 g fine gold), of which Switzerland was a member. Today, the "Goldvreneli" is known and appreciated worldwide and represents one of the most popular investment coins, not least thanks to its size and flexibility in buying and selling.
